NY Yankees Expand Their Possibilities
The New York Yankees are going beyong depending solely on their minor league system for new players to become pros. The youth baseball team "Hank's Yanks", sponsored by Hank Steinbrenner, has produced its first professional player.
Online, December 23, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Leonel Viñas, the newest New York Yankee pitcher, just signed to a minor league contract, after having spent a summer playing for the team known as "Hank's Yanks," which is a youth ballclub sponsored by Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner.
The 19-year-old Dominican, a Long Island resident, will now have a chance to wear the pinstripes at the next levels. The Yankees announced at a Press Conference on Tuesday that they have signed Vinas, the right-handed ace of Steinbrenner's team, to a Minor League contract.
Viñas had a record of 12-0 with a 1.12 ERA and 168n strikeouts in 84 innings pitched. He also pitched two no-hitters -- a four-inning no-hitter vs. Adelphi University and five no-hit innings vs. Suffolk Community College.
Hank's Yanks is a youth baseball team which is comprised of talented players from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds throughout the New York area.
Leonel Viñas was formally presented to the New York Press during a Press Conference held at El Nuevo Caridad Restaurant, owned by Dominican Impresario Miguel Montás. Among others present were the team's General Manager Brian Cashman, Yankees Special Adviser Ray Negron, Adam Unger from the Yankees' Minor League System, Sports Anchorman from ABC 7 Scott Clark, Sportscaster Bruce Beck from NBC 4, Billy Berroa Jr. from international sports show "Tu Mañana En Los Deportes", broadcast by Telemicro, and the Yankees' Spanish Announcer, Mr. Beto Villa.
