Nicole Rivera, author of the popular "Max the Shelter Dog" children's book, is offering complimentary author readings to New York City elementary schools that are fiscally restrained due to recent cutbacks in programming and services.

When asked why she has decided to offer complimentary Author Visits Nicole explains, "I adore children, and having worked with them recently in a tutoring capacity in low income communities where the children are struggling with reading, the desire to bring Max to more children on a personal level has grown strong. I have spoken with teachers and seen firsthand that not many Authors make it to elementary schools. They have also assured me that children LOVE when Authors read to them, so I am happy to make a child smile. I believe it's the best way to teach children about animal compassion and if I can touch a life on a more personal level then I have done what I am passionate about. There's nothing more gratifying to me than seeing the look on a child's face and seeing them connect with Max, the Shelter Dog."

The Author Visits will consist of Nicole first reading "Max, the Shelter Dog." The children will then be asked to choose a dog from Max's friends in the book and then draw a positive ending for that dog and share it with the class. A positive ending is what the children imagine the dog's life would be like if they adopted it from the animal shelter. This is one of the lessons taken from "Max's Animal Compassion Curriculum" a lesson plan based on the book "Max, the Shelter Dog." Finally, she will answer questions from students. Each Author Visit will last about 1 - 1 ½ hours.

Nicole Rivera is the author of "Max, the Shelter Dog" along with several other titles, including "Max's Diary - A Mini Journal", "Max's Animal Compassion Curriculum," "Max's Christmas Wish" to name a few. She is Founder of Max P. Productions, a company dedicated to teaching animal compassion through a unique line of children's books. "Max, the Shelter Dog" has been featured on the Rachael Ray Show.
