Michelle Luke Exhibits 'Isolated Lovers 2020 — Waiting' at realART — Sylvia White

The Stunning Photographic Imagery of Artist Michelle Luke

Isolated Lovers 2020 — Waiting (Her Story), by Michelle Luke

Artist Michelle Luke's sensual Black and White photographs, from the series  "Isolated Lovers 2020 — Waiting" can be seen during the final weeks of the 2020 Summer Juried exhibition at realArt—Sylvia White, in Agoura Hills, CA through August 28th.

The group show housed in Sylvia White's exciting new space, features, among many delicious others, the evocative, cinematic photographs of Michelle Luke. This artist, hailing from the tiny town of Whitefish, Montana, has exhibited internationally from Paris to Japan and back to NYC. This show marks Luke's first appearance in California, and it's worth seeing. Her research brings forth the resurgence of a photographic tradition where the strength of the black-and-white values goes hand in hand with the questioning of her subject — her introspection on intimacy and lovers' states of mind. Luke's photographs explore a realm of subdued psychology, which we might consider dysfunctional if her sense of compositional elegance and ingenuity weren't so fully functional.

In her latest work, Michelle Luke explores the yearning sigh of amorous absence. Two lovers, united in their isolation (in our isolation), wait under lockdown unable to unite — The female in a rural setting, the male in an  urban. Will love last? Does the heart grow fonder? One always loves more than the other... It would all seem straight forward enough, if not for her unexpected angles, odd elliptical spaces, and the powerful suppressed sexual tensions that teem forth from her pieces. Michelle Luke is an artist whose star is rising. The whole show merits the drive and the mask - that's a guarantee.
