KOMSCO Expands Chiwoo Series

KOMSCO Expands Chiwoo Series

After successfully released series of gold and silver medals in 2016, the KOMSCO offers the new 1/10 oz Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medal debuts with beautiful, colorized assay packaging (White, Black, Blue, and Red Assay cards).

As the first South Korean Silver bullion series, the Chiwoo medal series has quickly become one of the most popular series on the market. Released by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO), these medals were introduced with a very low mintage, with the 2016 releases at the low numbers of 30,000 for the 1 oz silver medal and down to a mintage of only 2016 for the 1 oz gold medal. This series celebrated the life and influence of Chiwoo Cheonwang, and 2017 has seen the release of the 1/10 gold edition complete with an updated design.

Chiwoo Cheonwang was a tribal leader in approximately 2600 BC and is a major figure in both Chinese and Korean history. His accomplishments were so lauded that many have transformed over time into stories of legendary magic and power. The leader of the Nine Li tribe in China, he was seen as the God of War and is considered to be one of three founding fathers of the country. Some of the tales told today include that he had four eyes and six arms and horns, could win a battle by breathing fog to disorient the enemy army and could bend the weather to his will.

One Korean history book names Chiwoo as one of the earliest ancestors of modern-day Koreans. All told, he won 9 major and 80 minor battles with his tribe and army. It took two emperors and their combined forces to finally defeat him.

Because of their starting limited mintage and continuing growth in popularity, many recommend purchasing these medals as they are introduced. KOMSCO additionally only made 50% of the mintage of the 2017 releases available outside of South Korea, making them more and more difficult to come by for collectors outside of the country. Today, he is popularly known as the symbol of the Red Devils, a South Korean national soccer team. When they played in the 2002 World Cup, fans used the image of Chiwoo from his shield as their mascot.

Available in Four Assay Card Colors

Instead of being made available in sealed sheets or within capsules, these medals are delivered inside plastic assay cards that include the certificate information on the back. These assay cards come in four different colors: white, blue, black, or red. The white card has the highest mintage, accounting for 70% of the overall mintage. The three remaining colors each account for 10% of the total and limited mintage of 25,000.

The obverse shows the image of Chiwoo’s shield, inscribed with “KOMSCO”, “Fine gold .999”, “1 Clay”, “Republic of Korea”, and the year of mintage- 2017. The reverse features the legendary image of Chiwoo Cheonwang riding into battle, showing him seated on a ferocious, rearing steed, in full armor with his cape caught in the wind behind him, holding his weapon and shield. His name is inscribed around the image. The “1 Clay” engraving on the obverse does not represent the face value of this medal but instead represents the introduction of a new concept measurement of value for South Korea relative to a certain amount of land (soil, earth, ground, or land).

These medals are forged with .999 pure gold, weigh 1/10 oz, and are available in their assay packaging in the color of your choice.
