Innovative Acrylics Installs a Glass Bottom Swimming Pool Floor in Mexico

Glass Pool Floor

The Concept: Owners of a building in Guadalajara, Mexico, wanted a glass bottom pool on the roof so that swimmers could see down into the building and those inside could see up into the pool and through the water into the sky.

In effect, they wanted a glass bottom sky pool that would allow light to pass through the swimming pool water and into the building – and that’s exactly what Innovative Acrylics provided. The company designed, fabricated and installed an above ground glass swimming pool on the building’s roof. The pool also included another transparent wall along the edge of the pool that allows swimmers to see out onto the roof and for those on the roof to see the water and swimmers in the pool.

The Solution: A glass pool floor was created from state-of-the-art acrylic and made a fascinating addition to the rectangular shaped pool. The glass pool floor was installed as an overhead skylight dividing the interior space from the exterior submerged wet side environment. The pool floor window was positioned to match an incline commonly found in pool floors. Normally the rebate height is set to ½” deeper than the panel thickness to ensure a smooth transition between the panel face and pool floor.

Challenges: A point of concern for pool designers is to ensure safety against accidental slippage. It’s commonly known that acrylic has a low coefficient of friction thus the potential for accidental falls is increased. Fortunately, there are special processes that can be employed to improve the coefficient of friction of acrylic, thus satisfying regulatory authorities.

Special consideration must be given during the design phase to ensure deflection limits are properly accounted for. The industry standard maximum initial deflection for four-side support pool floor windows is (short side/300). Decreasing deflections beyond this is purely a cosmetic endeavor.

Conclusion: Innovative Acrylics turned the building owners’ dream of having a glass sky pool into wonderful reality. Taking advantage of its staff’s expert design skills and the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing and installation techniques, Innovative Acrylics was able to install both a pool floor window and a transparent wall.

Swimmers now have two unique views and the owners have a truly one of a kind glass bottom pool between buildings. Swimmers can look out onto the beautiful wood deck through the side of the pool or down into the building through the transparent pool floor – making this pool a real exciting swimming experience.
