Applications Are Now Being Received For The Carey Gabay Scholarship Program

Carey Gabay, a lawyer, was part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's administration at the Empire State Development Corporation. During a cultural celebration in Brooklyn, on September 7, 2015, Carey was shot in the head after seeking cover from two rival gangs in a shootout. Carey died nine days later after being taken off of a respirator. As a result, of Carey's death, a fundraising page was created to raise funds for SUNY colleges, disadvantaged students.

New York --  Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the State University of New York is now accepting applications for the Carey Gabay Scholarship Program, in a press release.  Carey Gabey, a public servant, was tragically killed as an innocent victim of gun violence in October at the age of 43.  The scholarships in honor of Carey were announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo last year in an effort to assist outstanding students from disadvantaged backgrounds with needed funds to cover tuition costs.  This program will provide full-ride scholarships to five incoming SUNY students who exemplify Carey's commitment to social justice, leadership, and mentoring, as well as his personal story of succeeding academically despite having an economically disadvantaged background.

Governor Cuomo stated, “Carey was the perfect example of how hard work and service to others can make a difference in life. He could have done anything and yet, and chose to take his success and use it to give back to his community.”  “Carey was the perfect example of how hard work and service to others can make a difference in life. Carey was a role model within his community and grew up living in public housing in the Bronx while attending public school.  After completing his high school career, Carey went on to graduate from Harvard University and Harvard Law School.  Carey has or had a longstanding commitment to public service and giving back was one of those traits he possessed around him.  During Carey's career at Harvard University, he ran to become the president of his undergraduate student body.  More recent work reflects his tireless acts in public service.  Carey was the first Assistant Counsel to Governor Cuomo and later became the First Deputy Counsel for the Empire State Development Corporation.

Today, applications are being accepted for The Carey Gabay Scholarship Program to provide annual awards for a full-ride scholarship to five students who qualify at SUNY, a four-year college, beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.  These scholarships will help cover the costs of attendance, including tuition, room and board, college fees, books and supplies, and transportation and personal expenses.  Applications will be available here, and are due on March 15, 2016.
