New IPhone App Helps Keep Portland Weird

"Portland Insider", a new on-the-go travel guide for iPhone and iPad, uncovers Portland's hidden gems.

Hidden (and not so hidden) in the corners of the Rose City await surprises that Keep Portland Weird.

"Portland Insider", a new on-the-go travel guide for iPhone and iPad, uncovers Portland's hidden gems for visitors, those new to town, or even long time residents who seek unique activities beyond the mainstream.

"Everyone visiting or living in Portland knows about Powell's, the Blazers, Saturday Market, and Jake's," said author Rhonda Coleman, a travel blogger and resident of Portland for 20 years. "But do you know where to find the world's smallest park, Portland's first traffic light, or the 6:30 Surprise?"

The new app helps first-time tourists go directly to favored local hangouts in Portland's colorful neighborhoods. Frequent visitors who have more time to explore beyond the basics, and even Portland residents can take advantage of Coleman's personal research and irreverent perspective. "Those new to town can get up to speed fast, and even long time Portlanders who are bored with their routine can broaden their understanding of the town they think they know," she explained.

"Portland Insider helps users find under-the-radar, fun activities, like where to take a trapeze class, or float in a sensory deprivation tank," said Coleman. The app features restaurants and bars, factory tours, odd specialty stores, quirky museums, and local performers. Annual events include the Adult Soap Box Derby, Naked Bike Ride, and UFO Festival.

Hundreds of photos formatted for the iPhone and iPad include drive-by images and multiple ways to find the locations, if necessary. "Many of the entries are well hidden," said Coleman. "That's what makes them 'insider'!"
