New Article On OffTheGridNews.com Points to Some Challenging Questions

This article on Wikileaks points out that entertainers/politicians spew their diatribes under the guise of patriotism their rants are simply missing the boat on what Assange has long proclaimed to be the real value in broadcasting leaks.

The controversy surrounding whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks along with its creator Julian Assange continues to gain momentum as liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans have joined together in one voice to condemn the most recent leaks that Senator Diane Feinstein has described as, "a serious breach of national security and could be used to severely harm the United States and its worldwide interests."

If you're looking to score popularity points in Washington now is the time to jump on the anti-Assange bandwagon and condemn the Aussie for his complicity in weakening not only the United States' fight against terrorism but the international community's efforts as well. At least this is the rhetoric coming from our respected leaders like Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and the rest of the Obama administration, the quasi-politicians like Sarah Palin, and the political entertainment pundits like Jon Stewart and Glenn Beck.

But where does this outrage really originate from? That is what's being addressed in the most recent political article published on OffTheGridNews.com entitled "Why Obama, Palin and Their Minions Are Dead Wrong About WikiLeaks."

The article points out that while these entertainers/politicians spew their diatribes under the guise of patriotism their rants are simply missing the boat on what Assange has long proclaimed to be the real value in broadcasting leaks. That value is described by Bill Heid, author of the article, as having the ability to "reduce the power of the insider elite."

To Heid comments like "this disclosure is not just an attack on America - it's an attack on the international community," made by Hillary Clinton and Palin's contention that the government should be pursuing Assange "with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders" are completely off the mark.

As Heid points out, it's not the actual leaked information that has caused the most damage it's the fact that any information was leaked and published. What Washington has long taken comfort in is the ability to operate in secret. What that secret is simply doesn't matter; the value is in knowing nobody else will know. This is why the recent leaks have angered the elite, not because they are embarrassed about comments made about foreign leaders or even the identification of strategic sites that terrorists may now strike, it's because these leaders no longer have the security of hiding.

The fact that these leaders are trying to latch on to the more serious leaks is misleading according to Heid because all of the leaks, at their origin, are secrets and "the secrecy of any government makes it a conspirator of sorts."

Of course the government has the opportunity to go on the offensive when these leaks hit, instantly condemning them as treasonous or a threat to national security. They do a great job of deflecting the real issue that Assange is trying to present which is that with the revelation of secrets should come the realization that the government is, in part, acting as a conspirator. He's quick to point out that as a conspirator the government's best interests are not always matched to the best interests of the public and that is where the real crime lies.

What Heid really challenges the reader to do is not question the rightness or wrongness of what Assange has published but rather question why does our government find it necessary to operate under a cloak of darkness.
