Michael A. Zadeh, M.D. Performs Various Laparoscopic General Surgery Procedures Using A Single Incision Through Belly Button

Removal of Appendix, Gallbladders, and Hernia Repairs through Belly Button Potentially Leaves No Visible Scar

Zadeh Surgical, Inc. announced today the successful completion of a simultaneous Incisional and Umbilical hernia repair using the next generation Single Port Laparoscopy procedure. The Incisional hernia-which is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through a previous surgical incision-was performed through a single incision in the patient's belly button. It was the first procedure of its kind to be completed at the institution where it was performed.

According to Michael A. Zadeh, M.D. , the surgeon who performed the procedure, the patient may not even see evidence of the surgery. One of the major advantages of the "single port" procedure is that it utilizes only one access point, through the patient's belly button, ultimately resulting in the potential for no visible scar. By comparison, traditional laparoscopic surgeries involve three or more ½-inch or smaller incisions that may leave scars.

"Along with Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy), Hernia surgery is one of the most common procedures performed by general surgeons today. With the successful completion of this procedure, we are now equipped to offer patients the most advanced form of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of various different conditions," said Dr. Zadeh. "We are thrilled to be at the forefront of a new kind of surgery that continues to transform the minimally invasive arena, resulting in even better experiences for patients."

Currently, more than 80 percent of all cholecystectomies, and 90% of all appendectomies performed in the Unites States are done laparoscopically with multiple access points. Using the next generation single port procedure surgeons can make a single 2 cm incision through the belly button minimizing the pain that may be associated with the additional sites of entry.

The Single Port Laparoscopic technique can be applied to various other procedures such as colon resections, obesity, gynecological, and urological surgeries, making it a highly viable option for many people in need of surgery.
