Matt Weber, 17, of St. Charles, One of the Top Junior Golfers in the Nation, Will Sign His Letter of Intent to Play Golf for Indiana University After His Seni

Online, July 7, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Matt Weber is ranked as one of the top junior golfers in the nation. Currently at 143 nationally, he competes in five to six junior amateur tournaments per year (including two invitational tournaments). Previously, Matt competed in the Western Junior Championship at the Country Club of Florida, and placed 26th (he was the highest finisher from Illinois). He also has competed in the FootJoy Invitational at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina. Most impressively, Matt won the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Legend at Bristlecone in Hartland, Wisconsin in July, 2012. Over the three day tournament, Matt posted scores of 69, 70 and 73 to take home the championship amongst a crowd of 72 of the best male junior players in the nation.

Matt started playing golf when he was seven years old, in the Elgin Country Club junior golf program. Matt developed his game and continued in the program until he started playing in tournaments. "Junior golf at Elgin Country Club was the foundation that really got me started on the game" said Matt. "Without that, I would not have had the desire to play competitively".

Recently, Matt was offered a scholarship to play golf on the team at Indiana University. While he considered such schools as Northwestern, Illinois, Notre Dame and Virginia, Matt ultimately decided on Indiana, a school where he expects to play a lot on the golf team, and also one of the top 50 Division I golf schools in the nation. Matt hopes to make a difference with his game in the golf program: "I choose Indiana to maximize my playing time, develop talent and, ultimately, get competitive experience". Matt's goal is to be a competitive golfer on the professional tour.

What helped with Matt's decision is the near-full scholarship he will receive to play golf and for his academic success while at Burlington High School. Matt said the Indiana coaches came to see him play, and invited him to the school. After that, Matt received the scholarship offer this past February, made his verbal commitment in April and will sign his national letter of intent this fall, 2013. Matt will study business at Indiana.

Matt will continue to work on his game until he leaves for Indiana next fall. This year, Matt will compete on the Burlington High School golf team as a senior, and hopes to be the top golfer on the team. In the meantime Matt will continue to hone his skills at the range and on the course of Elgin Country Club, where his dad is a member (and where Matt first learned to play golf). Matt is also working with golf coaches John Perna and Dan Kochevar of Oak Brook, the latter of whom was recommended to him by another junior competitive golfer.

Elgin Country Club, a private, member-owned country club in Elgin and founded in 1901, is the fourth oldest private golf facility in Illinois. Since its founding, Elgin Country Club has provided its members a place to play golf on one of the best courses in Illinois.
