John Terry Set To Remain In England Squad For Euro 2012

Online, February 22, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Alstonefield, Staffordshire For the second time in his career, John Terry has had the England captain's armband taken from him, although the Chelsea defender is reportedly determined to play for his country at Euro 2012.

Terry has been charged with racially abusing Anton Ferdinand and will stand trial straight after the Euro 2012 finals, something which has prompted the FA to remove the player from captaincy duty although the 31-year-old is still available for selection when it comes to this summer's major tournament.

Terry is currently sidelined due to injury and there were reports that the Chelsea skipper was considering his international future in light of the FA intervention, something which was at odds with the opinion of manager Fabio Capello.

Capello has made it clear that he does not agree with the FA's decision, with the Italian having already reinstated Terry as captain following the defender originally losing the armband thanks to a newspaper expose which claimed that the player was having an affair with Wayne Bridge's former girlfriend.

Several people have commented that including Terry in the 23-man squad for the Euro 2012 finals could be problematic considering that Rio Ferdinand is likely to be among those that are also on the plane to Poland, although it appears that the Blues defender isn't ready to hang up his England boots yet. After originally recalling Terry as captain, Capello said: 'John, when he played without the armband, was every time a leader on the pitch, a leader in the dressing room.

'Always he is the same. He is a player that is himself a leader. This is really important. He is the biggest personality in the dressing room.'

Some will argue that it doesn't really matter who is captain of a football team considering that one central defender usually barks orders at fellow members of the back four, while the goalkeeper is also required to organise players when it comes to defending set pieces.

At least Terry is likely to have the backing of several Chelsea team-mates for Euro 2012, with Capello set to select Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge as part of the 23-man squad.

All five players could feasibly start England's opening match against France, especially considering that Wayne Rooney will be missing from the England attack and many would argue that Sturridge is the next striker in the pecking order.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United players are also likely to be included in the squad, with Steven Gerrard the bookmaker favourite to captain England at Euro 2012. Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll will also hope to make the shortlist, with Joe Hart, Gareth Barry, James Milner, Micah Richards, Joleon Lescott, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney representing the Manchester clubs.
