Gulf Breeze Chiropractic Clinic Targets Headache Sufferers

Headache sufferers may see more benefit by visiting their Gulf Breeze Chiropractic Clinic than through prescription and conventional medicine.

Dr. Joshua Pickett of Gulf Breeze, Florida reports that headaches are becoming a more common complaint in his office over recent months. "We have been getting patients of all ages who come to our practice with different types of headaches and have tried several prescription and over-the-counter medications with less than satisfactory results" says Dr. Pickett.

Of the many causes of headaches, some are still unknown. Some occur from inflammation of the blood vessels such as migraine and cluster headaches. These types of headaches can be quite debilitating and difficult to treat with conventional medicine. Dr. Pickett reports he also sees a rise in "tension headache" sufferers, especially closer to the stressful holiday season. He reports, "These types of headaches usually arise from tension in the neck and upper back muscles due to poor posture, stress, lack of sleep, auto accident trauma, and other issues."

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches that originate in the neck, and had substantially fewer side effects and provided longer lasting relief than commonly prescribed medication.

Locals may not initially think of turning to their Gulf Breeze Chiropractic Center for help. But Josh tells us that his practice has a very specific treatment program to benefit local headache sufferers. "First, we try to learn as much about the background of the headaches as possible. We need to know how and when they started, such as after a fall or auto accident, and any activities that may trigger or worsen the pain. If a patient tells us that sitting at their desk makes the headaches worse, we can recommend a more ergonomic work station or implement an exercise schedule to ease the neck tension." Over the course of treatment, Dr. Pickett and his staff work with the patient to evaluate the type of pain, the intensity and when it occurs in order to track changes and adjust as needed.

Dr Pickett concludes: "It is clear that a number of patients can and have benefited from our headache treatment program which includes spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, nutritional advice, posture and ergonomics exercises and overall lifestyle advice which can help to alleviate the root of the problems rather than mask them with prescription drugs. This new initiative should prove beneficial to headache and migraine sufferers in our area."
