April 19, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Nearly 34 percent of adults are obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago. The health threats from obesity have reached alarming levels which has led the government to intervene. Michelle Obama considers childhood obesity an epidemic and one of the greatest threats to America's health and economy, and is heading the campaign to combat obesity in children. Few people know that the recent healthcare reform bill, which has stirred widespread debate, deals not only with health insurance, but includes measures for obesity prevention and treatment. For instance, the bill mandates that restaurant chains with 20 or more stores display calorie information on their menus. The bill will also provide grants to community based organizations that develop programs that increase healthy food options and physical education at schools.
The Get Active America program organized by IHRSA, is an effort to encourage people who don't typically exercise, to get physically active and incorporate healthy lifestyle changes into their lives. According to the CDC, despite the clear health benefits of regular physical activity, over half of U.S. adults do not engage in physical activity at levels consistent with public health recommendations.
"It's our way of giving back to the community. By offering people for whom exercise is not part of their lives an opportunity to work out, we would like to demonstrate that exercising can be a fun and rewarding experience", says Paul Mazzella, Owner of Eastpointe Health & Fitness in Atlantic Highlands.
Visitors will get a chance to use the club's facilities and attend fitness classes free of charge. "Some people are intimidated to even step foot in a gym and feel they need to lose weight first, but we're not that kind of club; our members are just regular people with different fitness levels and from various age groups. Eastpointe Health & Fitness's personal trainers will be available during the open house to provide guidance and support especially for people who are not used to working out and need help using fitness machines", says Mazzella.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and good nutrition helps avoid obesity related problems. Health experts blame obesity for a range of medical conditions, among them heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and depression.
Becoming physically active, even if it means exercising just one or two times a week provides the following health benefits:
• Exercise improves your health. It increases your cardiovascular endurance, lowers your cholesterol, reduces your risk for heart disease, and helps you get off prescription drugs. It also decreases your risk for osteoporosis.
• Reduces stress by releasing endorphins which are hormones that elevate your mood . Exercising can also be a great outlet to release negative emotions such anxiety, worry, irritability and depression.
• Increases energy and mental focus.
• Helps you sleep better at night.
• Helps you lose extra pounds and makes you look great by firming and toning your muscles.
• Improves self-esteem as you start looking and feel better.
Most people know that they should exercise to improve their health, reduce stress and increase their lifespan, but they just don't know how-or where-to get started. The Get Active America program gives an opportunity for people in the community to start a regular exercise program.
