Ford SYNC to Give Drivers More Access with Voice Controlled Allergy Alert App

Drivers now have allergy-based weather forecast at their command with new SYNC-capable Allergy Alert application from Ford.

The Ford SYNC has brought a new level of intelligence and access to vehicles since its introduction in 2007. A new addition to the popular Ford device is the newly SYNC AppLink-compatible Allergy Alert application.

Designed to provide a safe way for drivers to monitor seasonal allergy forecasts, Ford SYNC can allow drivers to easily connect and access information from Allergy Alert without providing a distraction to driving. With this new feature, drivers can prompt Allergy Alert to provide information such as a potential asthma risk index, ultraviolet rays and potential local conditions that could instigate allergy symptom reactions.

"Mobile health apps are changing the way consumers manage their own wellness, and Ford SYNC provides the platform to extend this growing trend to the driving experience," explained Doug VanDagens, global director of Ford Connected Services. "The SYNC AppLink-enabled Allergy Alert app allows drivers to quickly check current and upcoming pollen and other health risk conditions with simple voice commands while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road."

In May of 2011, Ford began research to look into incorporating health and wellness applications into the connective capability of the Ford SYNC. The research projects included mobile app integration, medical device capability and cloud-based health management services. This research was just a small indication of the commitment Ford has to providing health-improvement capabilities in their cars.

"We are attempting to create the car that cares," says Gary Strumolo, global manager of Ford Research and Innovation. "We want to change the paradigm that in-car connectivity systems such as SYNC can only be used for information and entertainment purposes. Health and wellness are key issues for our customers outside of the car; therefore, we want to leverage our connectivity platform to improve their time behind the wheel. The trend in mobile health is all about knowing potential health concerns before they happen so that they don't surprise a person, even while driving."
