EMS Students Raise Funds for Sandy Relief and Receive a Thank You from NJ's First Lady

Liel Sterling and Ema Bandazian at The Elisabeth Morrow School in Englewood, NJ, were treated to a private reception at the Governor's residence for their work raising $3278.12 for First Lady Mary Pat Christie's Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund.

On Monday, October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy brought unthinkable devastation to parts of the state, destroying homes, businesses and some of New Jersey's most popular tourist destinations. The Fund was launched to aid the Garden State rebuild. To date, over $34 million from more than 27,500 donors world-wide has been raised.

Liel Sterling is the EMS student council president and Ema Bandazian is the 7th grade representative to the student council. To reach their fundraising goal, the students held a candy sale, sold bracelets with the theme, "Aspire to Inspire," and donated proceeds from their annual Founder's Day Carnival.

"We are so proud and excited for Ema and Liel to experience this wonderful opportunity to be recognized for their meaningful work," said EMS Head of School Aaron Cooper. "Their efforts certainly are in tune with our mission to foster moral growth and social responsibility."

New Jersey's First Lady, Mary Pat Christie said, "On behalf of The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, I would like to thank the students of the Elisabeth Morrow School for their generosity and willingness to help others through their donation of these funds. Liel and Ema are real examples of what makes New Jersey proud and I thank their teachers and school officials for their support of these young leaders."

Along with a check, Liel and Ema presented Mrs. Christie with four "Aspire to Inspire" red bracelets to be given to the Governor's children. The students were accompanied to the Governor's reception on April 9th by their parents and Elisabeth Morrow's Head of School, Aaron Cooper.
