Earth Day Celebrations at Sangam University Bhilwara Rajasthan

India today indeed has emerged as a top ranking environmental, social, economic and political power. Education is the key component of any environmental initiative, as it provides for sustainability and prepares future generations of global citizens.

Indeed it's high time for everyone to remember famous author Ayn Rand quote "Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves - or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth". The height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Protest was the order of the day, but saving the planet was not the cause. War raged in Vietnam, and students all over America increasingly opposed it.

The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.

The first Earth Day event took place in the United States on April 22, 1970 and four decades later, the annual observance has become a global event, with an estimated one billion people from countries all over taking part in a multitude of activities which include a renewed call to combat global warming and protect the environment. The theme for 2013 is "The Face of Climate Change" to achieve the goal of saving the planet which as per a Native American proverb goes as - "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."

Sangam University Bhilwara has establishes a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international importance on a regular basis to increase the current awareness among the students. On 22 April 2013, Sangam University students made a solemn resolve to protect the environment, keep the campus clean as well as green and participated in a plantation drive in the campus.
