Eagle Scout Association Honors Marvin Kiel as Namesake for Eagle Scout Class of 2010

The Eagle Scout Association of the Sam Houston Area Council will formally honor the new Marvin Kiel Class of Eagle Scouts at an Eagle Scout Gathering on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.

The Eagle Scout Association of the Sam Houston Area Council has designated Marvin Kiel as the namesake for the newly emerged Eagle Scout Class of 2010, which includes all Eagle Scouts whose official board of review was completed between January 1 and December 31, 2010.

The Marvin Kiel Eagle Scout Class of 2010 will be formally honored at a Gathering of Eagles Reception on Saturday, April 30, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at The Berry Center, 8877 Barker-Cypress Road, Cypress, Texas 77433. With the theme "Rising Stars Among Us," this Eagle Scout gathering will host the Marvin Kiel Eagle Scout Class along with Eagle Scouts from all prior years for networking, mentoring and continuing their support of Scouting.

Traditionally, the Sam Houston Area Council honors each year's class of Eagle Scouts with a namesake, whose volunteer Scouting career is distinguished by longevity and exemplary service. Marvin Kiel's volunteer Scouting career of more than 40 years is well-deserving of this honor. He joins previous Eagle Class namesakes such as Orville D. Gaither, Sr., retired, Gaither Petroleum Co.; Harry E. Bovay, Jr., chairman of the Mid South Tele-Communications Co.; and Larry Kellner, former chairman and chief executive officer of Continental Airlines.

In addition to his Houston-area scout service, Kiel has been affiliated with Boy Scout councils in New Orleans and Black Hills, South Dakota, dating back to 1944. He has served in more than 20 leadership positions, and received more than a dozen awards and honors, including the James E. West Fellowship Award, Distinguished Commissioner Award, Christian Scouter's Award, Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow, Silver Beaver Award, and District Award of Merit in the Mustang District, where he continues to serve. Boundaries of the Mustang District currently coincide with the Spring Branch Independent School District, and also include a part of Houston ISD between Buffalo Bayou and Westheimer Road.

"Marv Kiel is a great selection to honor the 2010 Eagle Scout Class. Among many significant contributions is his unfailing dedication to collecting, analyzing and reporting Scout data at both the council and district levels. Marv Kiel is an absolute whiz with PCs and databases. I often think of him as the Mustang District equivalent to the Library of Congress. And he always did it with a smile, in his quiet, unassuming manner that has endeared him now to generations of Scouters," said Dennis Cornwell, who recently served with Kiel as Mustang District Chairman.
