Dorothy Clarke Wilson Lives on In Digital Reproductions of Her Works

Numerous historical fiction and biographical works of prolific author Dorothy Clarke Wilson are making a comeback in digital formats.

Dorothy Clarke Wilson, author of over 200 fiction and nonfiction works, was a prolific author of the 20th century, creating richly detailed fiction works based on biblical characters and events. Wilson also created in-depth profiles of humanitarians who made a difference in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Some of Wilson's most notable works include Moses, Prince of Egypt, published in 1949, upon which the Cecil B. DeMille film epic, "The 10 Commandments" starring Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner was based. Other works that gained notoriety include Jezebel, published in 1955, and Hilary: The Brave World of Hilary Pole', published in 1972.

Dorothy Clarke Wilson received numerous awards in her lifetime, and was recognized by the American Association of University Women in 1998 for her work in social justice. She was honored in 1988 and 1989 with the Marion Hartman Award and the Deborah Moore Award, respectively, by Westbrook College, which recognized her philanthropy and social work. She was also awarded the New England United Methodist Award for Excellence in Social Justice Ministry in the mid-1970s.

Wilson published over 25 books in her lifetime, as well as a large collection of lectures, essays, plays, and short stories. Many of Wilson's historical fiction novels are based on biblical characters, bringing to three-dimensional life biblical characters, the life of Jesus, and the apostles. Wilson's illustrative writing style gained her notoriety in the 50s and 60s, and to new generations from the 1970s to the new millennium. Her fiction and biographical works display a passion rarely seen by today's authors.

Wilson's papers and writings are today are part of a collection at the Folger Library at the University of Maine. As an author, playwright, and philanthropist, Dorothy Clarke Wilson's works will live on in time, both in print and in digital formats.
