Central Illinois Endoscopy Center Attains Highest Adenoma Detection Rate in Central Illinois
Peoria based Central Illinois Endoscopy Center (CIEC) boasts an adenomatous detection rate (ADR) that surpasses minimum standards and continuously exceeds general standards for quality performance.
Online, June 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Peoria based Central Illinois Endoscopy Center (CIEC) boasts an adenomatous detection rate (ADR) that surpasses minimum standards and continuously exceeds general standards for quality performance. Their quality performance measures include detection of adenoma rates, which is the percentage of time that at least one polyp is found during a colonoscopy. The more frequently polyps are found, the fewer interval cancers are diagnosed between tests. CIEC compares data to GI Quality Improvement Consortium, Ltd. (GI QuIC), which compares different centers with others. The latest results show that CIEC has the highest ADR at this national reporting level out of fifty reporting sites. They are also involved in "Quality Quest for Health," and have the highest ADR in the central Illinois area.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Colonoscopy procedures are used by the vast majority of clinicians as the primary tool to screen for colon cancer. Routine colonoscopy screenings can prevent 90% of colon cancer deaths.
One of the leading quality metrics used in screening colonoscopy is the adenoma detection rate (ADR). The theory is that the majority of colorectal cancer derives from the adenomatous polyp. Therefore, a higher adenoma detection rate leads to fewer colorectal cancers developing in the future. The minimum standard ADR for men is 25% (at least one polyp detected for every 4 men screened) and women is 15%. CIEC shows an average ADR for men of 50% and women of 33%, which is double the standard.
"Part of the reason our ADR is twice the national rate is our attention to a good, clean bowel prep and a thorough, high quality colon exam," said Scott Wu, MD, Gastroenterologist at CIEC. "Our physicians are able to get around the entire colon 99% of the time, which will decrease the change of a polyp being missed," added Wu.
