CEEMAN Rates Two Case Studies From IMT Ghaziabad In Its Top-Ten List Of Case Studies For The Year

In yet another episode confirming the emergence of India as the next big destination for business education globally, the Central and East European Management Development Association (CEEMAN).

In yet another episode confirming the emergence of India as the next big destination for business education globally, the Central and East European Management Development Association (CEEMAN), has recognized 2 Indian case studies among its Top 10 case-studies for the year 2011-12. Not surprisingly, both these brilliant case studies were submitted by two world-renowned faculty members of one of the best Indian B-schools, IMT Ghaziabad .

"Most business schools in India are forced to use foreign cases, which are out of context and not representative of the unique challenges and opportunities facing businesses in India," explained Professor N. L. Ahuja, Finance Department, IMT Ghaziabad, whose work on Financial and Strategic Appraisal of a unique Coal-to-Liquid Project, won him a top 10 position. "Therefore, there is a great vacuum of good Indian case studies. That is why IMT Ghaziabad has taken this lead to write and disseminate case studies from Indian businesses."

Professor Ahuja of IMT Ghaziabad is not new to such an honour, with two earlier case studies having won awards and been registered with ECCH (European Case Clearance House), among numerous other achievements. His teaching philosophy in the classes at IMT Ghaziabad is completely case-study based, and he often organises Case Writing Workshops to encourage and train faculty members from across the country in writing case studies.

"India imports about two-thirds of its crude oil requirements, resulting in huge outflow of precious foreign exchange. As a result, it has become necessary for the country to look for alternative sources of energy. The coal-to-liquid (CTL) technology of coal gasification offers a credible alternative source of fuel, as proved by Sasol of South Africa. In 2009, the Government of India shortlisted Global Synfuels Company (name changed) as one of the selected few companies to build a coal-to-liquid (CTL) project. While the project is strategically important to the company and highly desirable for the country, there are serious doubts about the commercial viability of the project because of which the company is in a dilemma about whether to go ahead with the project or not. My case study presents this dilemma."

A total number of 37 cases, written by authors from 33 institutions in 21 countries (Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and USA) were submitted for the competition. Based on the competition criteria, 19 cases from 17 institutions and 12 countries were then shortlisted for evaluation by the jury. In fact, IMT Ghaziabad is the only institution in the world which has two cases in the CEEMAN top 10; the other being a much admired case study on the revolutionising power of CSR, called Satya Bharti School Programme: The Kaizen Way, by Professor Jyoti Kainth, Department of Marketing, IMT Ghaziabad .

"This case on the Satya Bharti School Programme, an initiative of the Bharti Foundation - the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises - highlights the journey, achievements and challenges faced during the implementation of a noble vision. The case maps the strategy implemented from multiple vantage points and aims to showcase how the compelling need to provide quality education in rural India transformed the way people look at CSR activities."

Professor Kainth of IMT Ghaziabad has a well-respected clutch of case studies which have been published in books. She has also been invited on various occasions to present Papers in national and international fora.

"I am happy that I got this opportunity and was able to convert the same into a meaningful case of global recognition and standards. But, a lot needs to be done still. I want to continuously work to sharpen my research focus and want to keep writing more case studies and research papers which are of international repute. Fortunately, IMT Ghaziabad actively supports and encourages its faculty to be thought leaders - globally as well as in the class-room."

Both these cases, from two world-class faculty members of IMT Ghaziabad , are shortly to be published in the internationally acclaimed journal Emerald Emerging Markets Case Studies. Two case studies in the prestigious Emerald Journal - widely read across B-schools globally - clearly establish the pre-eminent position of IMT Ghaziabad as a premier B-school of India.
