Employed at the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank, Erick Sikhosana joins a list of only eight people to be awarded the official Cape Sommelier™ badge, a testament to a standard of excellence achieved in fine dining through creative food and wine pairing.

History of the Cape Wine Academy

The Cape Wine Academy was founded by SFW as a marketing initiative, later to be co-funded by KWV upon the merger of their academy. After KWV gave 3 years notice of withdrawal, funds were partly made up by The Wine Trust and the increase in student enrolments.

In November 2002, the Cape Wine Academy staff were retrenched by SFW and the Cape Wine Academy was sold to a company called pointBreak for R1.00.

On 15 December 2004, Hein Koegelenberg - from La Motte wines - acquired the Cape Wine Academy from pointBreak and orchestrated a consortium of wine industry experts to lead the academy.

The consortium includes a 25% holding by Cape Wine Academy management with the remaining 75% being made up of wine producers, distributors, retailers, restaurateurs, an Empowerment Group and Cape Wine Masters, thus ensuring that a wide spectrum of the diverse wine industry is represented.
