We will look at email and phone pitching in turn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guides.newswire.com\/guide\/how-to-create-a-newsroom\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin-left: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/get-started-newsroom-e1467064747237.png\" alt=\"get-started-newsroom\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Email Pitches<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to the subject line of your email.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Think of it as a headline that will entice them to read more.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Always put their address in the &#8220;To&#8221; field.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This shows it is a customized email.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>NEVER put their address in the BCC<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will make it look like it\u2019s mass-produced.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Keep it short.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Everyone is busy these days, but journalists live and die by deadlines. Keep it short and to the point, no more than 6 sentences in 2 paragraphs. This means your carefully crafted email will rarely be seen because it\u2019s been snagged and dumped in the spam folder.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Mention that you have supporting materials.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Send them to ONE URL if you wish to show them anything in particular that you think would be interesting enough for them to get excited by and want to use as part the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phone<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Dare to phone.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many people send their pitches via email. They might not be delivered, however, and they are often sent to the trash with just a click. Phoning will grab their attention. Just make sure it is a good way.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Practice your pitch until you have it down pat.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Think of it as an \u2018elevator speech\u2019 you use for marketing. Say what you have to say in a normal speed and speaking voice in 30 seconds or less.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Be brief.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you get a live person, tell them in a couple of words why you\u2019re calling. If they say they will call but don\u2019t, try again once more.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Follow up but don\u2019t hound them.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you don\u2019t get them after the first try and don\u2019t hear from them after a reasonable amount of time, like a day or so, try again. Judge this best by how long you have until any important date you might be working around, such as a launch date. Too far ahead, there\u2019s no urgency. Too close to the time, it might be too late for them to give you any press coverage.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Try email.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you are sure your journalist is a good fit because you have done your research well, it could be they would prefer an email. In this case, try it. The opposite is true as well.
