ALTlab 3.0 Photography Residency

Online, December 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Goa Center for Alternative Photography is pleased to present the third edition of ALTlab Photography residency to enable photographers to explore alternative photographic practices. The ALTlab residency has been taking place each year since 2011 for two months over March and April in Goa. In order to make this edition more engaging and inspiring we have added a "walking" component to the existing format of the ALTlab. As said by a German philosopher and poet (if an important enlightenment philosopher, better to name him?), 'all truly great thoughts are conceived by walking'; we think that walking can inspire creative processes allowing the artists in residency to engage deeply with their surroundings as well as with the alternative photographic processes they explore.

For ALTlab 3.0, the resident artists will be a part of a three day walk expedition (total 38 Km). This will not be a guided tour or a photo walk but a self-exploring and self-realization endeavour.

Prior to the actual walk of three days, artists will be lead through a two week introductory workshop on alternative photography. These workshops will be led by mentors who will initiate a dialogue on the basics of alternative photography with the residents. The artists will therefore be in a better position to decide upon the kind of camera and equipment to be carried along during the walk.

Artists will be encouraged to record their experiences of and responses to the surroundings during the walk. The images that are created on the spot will be the base for further experiments using Alternative Photography processes. Artists will have all the freedom to choose their project for the residency either before, during or after the walk. The project however, should be based on the walk and the alternative process selected.

The artist will have to choose one process from the following options available:

1. Albumen print
The albumen print, also called albumen silver print, was invented in 1850 by Louis Desire Blanquart-Evrard, and was the first commercially exploitable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative.

2. Gum Bichromates
This is a 19th century photographic printing process based on the light sensitivity of dichromates. It is capable of rendering painterly images from photographic negatives.

3. Mike Ware New cyanotype
This is a photographic printing process that renders a cyan-blue print. The process was popular in engineering circles well into the 20th century.

4. Van dyke brown
This is an early photographic printing process. The process was so named due to the similarity of the print color to that of a brown oil paint named for Flemish painter Van Dyck.

5. Salt Prints
The salt print was the dominant paper-based photographic process for producing positive prints during the period 1839 through 1860.

Financial and other support
1. Travel expenses: Maximum of Rs. 8000 - To and from Goa (against actual bills).
2. A total stipend of Rs. 20,000 for 2 months will be paid to the residents.
3. All the material required for experimenting will be provided by Goa-CAP.
4. The Goa-CAP apartment is furnished and rooms will be available on twin-sharing basis.
5. There is a common space that can be shared for work or socializing. Residents will have to make their own arrangements for food. A common kitchen at the apartment can be used for cooking.
6. A coordinator will be in charge of logistics and will attend to any particular needs of the guests.

Eligibility
Residency applications for Altlab 3.0 are invited from contemporary artists, of any medium, who are eager to use a darkroom and alternative processes to create images. Applicants must be citizens of INDIA. There are no age limitations.

Application procedure
Applicants should be seriously engaged with researching and developing their own photography language. They should be open and willing to live modestly with other artists for a period of two months. The selected residents will have to commit themselves to being present in Goa during the time of this residency programme.

Documenting the research undertaken during the residency is an integral part of the process that will shape the analysis of your work and the conclusions that you can draw. Hence resident artists will be expected to carry out systematic and regular documenting of the processes explored through a blog or other media.

Timeline
• Deadline for receipt of applications: 28 January 2013
• Notification to short listed applicants: 03 February 2013. The list of selected applicants will be posted onto the Goa-CAP website at www.goa-cap.com.
• Receipt of acceptance letters from applicants: 05 February 2013
• Commencement of the 2 month residency: 01 March 2013
