Moving to an "Active Adult Community"

Owning your own home is the peak of independence. But along with that freedom comes a lot of obligations which often take time and opportunities away from things we'd rather be doing.

That was the situation facing Pamela Andrews. She loved her big house in Centennial Village. Her neighbors were great, and the nearby playground was a bonus for her grandkids. "But I came to realize that this idyllic setting did not suit my current lifestyle, which was too crammed with responsibilities. I desperately wanted more time for friends, family, and community groups. Clearly, something had to go, but what?"

Program Director for Public Radio Delmarva, and a professional organizer and researcher, Pam studied all of her options. She was attracted to the 'planned community' concept. These communities provide the benefits of home ownership without many of the routine maintenance responsibilities.

After considering and visiting communities, Pam settled on SummersGate, a new active adult community off Johnson Road in Salisbury, Maryland. "I was ready for a community of folks 55 and older where we did not have yard work; where the amenities we desire are part of the plan and are made available to the whole community in a cost-effective way." She liked SummersGate's floor plans and "the flexible approach to meeting the needs of each individual home-buyer."

An attractive lifestyle is one thing; arranging the economics to make it happen is another. "Sometimes, when I told others of my plans to move to SummersGate, I got the 'Yeah, but...' response. 'Yeah, but... how are you going to do that in this economy? Surely, this is the worst time ever to sell your current home.' Or 'Yeah, but...how are you going to get financing for a home in the current home-financing environment?'"

Those were exactly the questions she was asking herself. "I decided to make my dream of moving to SummersGate come true despite the very challenging economic environment." She drew on the expertise of Salisbury's network of professionals who worked closely with her. "My saving grace was having many, many conversations with local bankers, realtors, builders, financial planners, and community developers who patiently worked through the issues and roadblocks. SummersGate management was willing to work through the problems with me to make this move possible."

Pam moved into her new home at the end of June. She's delighted with her decision and the outcome of all the work involved. "I am in my new home, with new appliances, new plumbing, new ... well, new everything... and all with a 10-year home warranty! Now I can drive away from home to go to meetings and appointments, or leave for a trip knowing that the grass will be cut, shrubs trimmed, weeds pulled, and leaves raked up... but not by me. I wave to my new neighbors who are charming, interesting folks, and thank my lucky stars that I live in Salisbury, Maryland, where we can still count on folks to help us accomplish our dreams... at any age."
