ZyXEL UK Makes 'Next Generation Access' Profitable

Access and Aggregation Switches from ZyXEL deliver full IP-based multi-media on demand services at a price point which can reduce initial equipment costs by up to 60%

Wokingham, UK, 10th November 2009: ZyXEL Communications UK Ltd (ZyXEL), a leader in networking technology and the UK subsidiary of one of the world's leading broadband solutions specialists, today confirmed that its Next Generation Access (NGA) solutions are both affordable and accessible, reducing initial equipment costs by up to 60% for ISPs looking to offer faster connectivity to the customer premise.

As well as investment in Tier 1 core technology, ISPs also need to invest in the aggregation and access layer of the network, which can push costs to spiral over budget. With this in mind, ZyXEL's Next Generation Access (NGA) solutions offer a cost-effective alternative for the aggregation and access layer, which can significantly lower CAPEX and OPEX whilst being interoperable with the Tier 1 core technology.

Compared with other Tier 1 vendors, ZyXEL's, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) accredited, aggregation and access layer switches reduce initial equipment costs by up to 60%. This saving means that ISPs can build out Gigabit connectivity to the customer premise at virtually the cost of Fast Ethernet speed - this in turn gives ISPs the ability to future-proof bandwidth allowing extra capacity to be 'switched on' when required.

ZyXEL's MEF switches offer the guarantee of bandwidth, scalability, reliability and exclusive service management and can further help the ISP to lower CAPEX and OPEX by providing a raft of benefits including lifetime warranty and zero-charge for software upgrades.

In addition, ZyXEL's MEF switches are specifically designed for installation into locations where rack-space is limited e.g.. street cabinets. From a maintenance perspective ZyXEL MEF switches include a "front access" design making the switches easily accessible, hot-swappable fan trays and dual AC/DC power.

ZyXEL's credentials in the space are solid with carrier switch implementations within Taiwan's largest incumbent telecom operator, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) as well as European roll-outs with Wilhem.Tel and NetCologne in Germany.

Commenting on the current outlook of NGA for ISPs, Lee Marsden, country manager, ZyXEL UK says: "The growing complexity and diversity of applications such as HD IPTV, Peer-to-Peer communication, Voice, Gaming and VPN are driving the need for increasingly high Internet connection to the home and business. The challenge for ISPs is to increase subscribers and profitability whilst keeping costs down. ZyXEL's NGA solutions can help to align revenue and costs with the value of the network resource used and facilitate ISPs to offer services that can lead to more profitable subscribers."

ZyXEL UK is a sponsor of NextGen 09 Conference, 16-17 November 2009, an event running to support the development of Next Generation Broadband projects. More information at: www.inca.coop

ZyXEL is also hosting a ½ day seminar on the 2nd December 2009 at its Wokingham offices for organisations putting down fibre, building "open access" FTTx networks, or wanting to offer high speed communication services and applications to businesses. More information at: www.zyxel.co.uk/nga
