Webinar Season On Workplace Bullying for Patricia Berkly LLC

Dr. Leah Hollis conducts several webinars during summer training season on workplace bullying.

Dr. Leah P.Hollis, researcher and consultant at Patricia Berkly LLC presented the findings of her book, Bully in the Ivory Tower, How Aggression and Incivility Erode American Higher Education. Her webinar, Black and Blue Academy offers national and international statistics on bullying; then the presentation shows how the prevalence of bullying in American higher education is 58% higher than the national average.

The webinar, which has a running time of 50 minutes, offers insight on how to determine if a staff member is a bully. The webinar notes that many people are in denial about facing a bully; it's tough to come to terms with working in a miserable environment. Aggressive behavior, insults, and escalating harassment are just some of the behaviors exhibited by bullies.

The webinar also offers solutions for individuals trying to cope with a bully. Staying healthy is key. The body is already under enough stress withstanding the aggression of a bully. Hollis urges people facing bullying to come out of isolation and find support in dealing with the problem.

As noted in her book, bullying is also a costly organizational problem. Sixteen percent of the respondents to her study had left an institution because of a bully. Another 22% were considering leaving once the economy improves. The webinar offered organizational strategies to deal with a bully and stop the costly expense and organizational risk involved in harboring a bully.

Many schools turned out to view the webinar including, Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, James Madison, and Harvard University. Webinars can be a great way to train a small staff without including travel expense and extensive time from work.
