Ukrainian-Canadian Twitter Storm Is Coming

Online, April 15, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Ukrainian Canadian Community will hold its first ever national Twitter Storm in support of Motion to ban the Russian Standard Vodka from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores. Cheri DiNovo, Member of Provincial Parliament from Parkdale-High Park riding tabled the Motion at the Ontario Legislative Assembly on April 3, 2014.

The Twitter Storm is organized by the EuroMedian Canada Committee that operates under the auspices of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and with the assistance of the Institute of Ukrainian Language and Popular Trends. AutoMaidan Toronto Committee, Young Professionals and Skilled Workers Association and Crimean-Tatar Society in Canada support the Twitter Storm, too.

The Twitter Storm will start at 1pm on Thursday, April 17, and will last for one full hour. It will appeal to the lawmakers of Queen's Park to support Cheri DiNovo's Motion. Twitter Storm will also thank Cheri DiNovo for her Motion. The list of targeted audience will be revealed on the day of the Twitter Storm and released on facebook page of the Institute of Ukrainian Language and Popular Trends, https://www.facebook.com/events/371285556346209/ The list will be released as simple text so that all users may "copy" hushtag messages and "paste" them onto their own twitter accounts.

"With this Twitter Storm, we hope to raise awareness of the illegal and military actions of the Russian Federation in Crimea, Ukraine, and send the message internationally that Ontario will not be complicit in supporting a regime that invades its neighbour, illegally annexes its territory and sends residents and provocateurs to Ukraine with the intention to stir up provocations and unrest," said Volodymyr Paslavskyi, one of the organizers of the Twitter Storm.

Statement of Cheri DiNovo at Ontario Legislative Assembly, April 3, 2014 (Quote):

Today, I'm tabling a motion. It says that, in the opinion of this House, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario should suspend the sale of Russian-made Russian Standard Vodka due to the international crisis in Ukraine. I want to make a couple of things clear. First of all, it's just one brand that is 100% made in Russia; that's Russian Standard Vodka.

Of course we know, and our friends here in the Ukrainian Canadian Congress who are all here to witness the tabling of this motion, that this is symbolic. This is symbolic, but symbols are so important, particularly where peace is concerned and particularly where the lives of Ukrainian Ontarians are concerned. There are some 350,000 Ukrainians who live in our province. They have relatives in Ukraine. Many knew people in the Maidan. Last Sunday, I was out with them in front of city hall, where 100 martyrs were honoured, 100 who had been killed by sniper fire while protesting in the Maidan.

This is a critical situation. People are concerned for their families and their loved ones. It's extremely important that we say something in this Legislature, that we do something in this Legislature, on behalf of our constituents. As a co-author, along with yourself, Mr. Speaker, of the Holodomor bill that declared that a genocide, and also as co-author of Ukrainian heritage month, I could not not speak. On behalf of our 350,000 Ukrainians, on behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and on behalf of people who desire peace everywhere, I table this motion.
