With less than two weeks to go until the Nedbank Sani2C, Super Group is revving up to be the logistics company that makes things happen behind the scenes at the world's biggest full-service mountain bike stage race.
The Nedbank Sani2C takes place from 13 - 17 May 2014 and this year marks a special occasion as the race celebrates its tenth anniversary with the very first event taking place back in 2005.
It has grown from a few hundred cyclists to now one of the most popular events on the cycling calendar with over 4 500 riders participating in the tenth edition of the race.
The three day stage race takes riders on a 271km mountain bike journey from Underberg to Scottburgh celebrating a decade of endurance racing, specialised logistics and committed sponsor support.
One of these committed sponsors is Super Group, South Africa's leading logistics and supply chain mobility company, and the official logistics partner to the Nedbank Sani2C. Using its extensive logistics expertise and resources, Super Group is responsible for 'moving' the entire Nedbank Sani2C from stage to stage, transporting all the riders' equipment in its distinctive red trucks and taking care of the complicated event logistics.
"Super Group congratulates Glen Haw and his team on this historic milestone of the tenth edition of the Sani2C," said Jeff van Driel, Chief Business Development & Marketing Officer at Super Group. "This is one of the most iconic mountain bike races in South Africa, if not the world, and we are proud to be associated with such a professional, well-run event. Our customers enjoy taking part in this event and it is also a unique race in that it gives back to the community, promotes job creation and is therefore closely aligned to our corporate Social Responsibility objectives."
Managing an event of this magnitude would not be possible without wheels on the road and this is where Super Rent, the Group's vehicle leasing division, comes to the fore. Over six 8-ton trucks, eight refrigerated 8-ton trucks and two 4-ton fridge trucks are just some of the vehicles that Super Rent supplies to the Nedbank Sani2C along with the drivers and crew.
"Super Rent has a strong footprint in KwaZulu-Natal with branches in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay, which makes the Sani2c a race we are proud to be associated with," said Avinash Sukdeo, Operations Director at Super Rent. "At Super Rent, we operate one of the largest commercial vehicle rental fleets in the country with over 2 500 vehicles available nationwide from 1-ton bakkies to 30-ton trucks as well as specialised vehicles such as crane trucks."
But that is not where Super Group's involvement stops. Other business units that have contributed to the success of the Sani2C include VSc Solutions, the group's Technology and Consulting division, which provides cutting edge route mapping and tracking; SG Logistics and SG Freight business Units, which has provided Interlink truck and trailer combinations who also plays a key role.
Super Group is also taking an active role in the race with as many as 90 riders cycling under the Super Group team colours bringing together clients, suppliers and employees in a massive show of support for the tenth edition of the race.
About the race
Beginning in Underberg, the 87km first stage sees riders pass through the foothills of South Africa's highest mountain range - the Drakensberg - before descending towards the stage finish line in Eastwolds, passing through the indigenous Nxumeni Forest on the way, which is home to the endangered Cape Parrot.
Stage 2 is arguably the toughest of the race. It begins at the MacKenzie Country Club, in Eastwolds, ending 96km's later at the Rosevere's Farm, 10 km south of Highflats. Riders can expect gut-wrenching single-track as they pass over the towering cliffs of the Umkomaas Valley. The steep drop into the heart of the valley will then see riders meander through a game farm teaming with Kudu, Bush Pig and Nyala. Riders will then be faced with the treacherous climb out of the valley to get home.
Day 3 is the easiest of the three days riding 78-km. The riding will be fast with few technical sections. Riders will journey through sugar cane farmlands and coastal bush and as they head towards the exhilarating finish along the Nedbank Green Mile where they'll be taken along a floating bridge created specifically for the Sani2C. The 360life Bridge crosses right over the lagoon before taking riders to the finish line on Scottburgh's main beach.
