Stunning Photo Mosaic Unveiled at the Pittsburgh Penguins' CONSOL Center: The Mario Mosaic

The Pittsburgh Penguins and The Mario Lemieux Foundation team up to create a 20ft x 8ft permanent mosaic mural in the new Consol Center. The photo mosaic (ie. Mario Mosaic) was designed by Picture Mosaics. Photo submissions have been re-opened.

What happens when you take two world class organizations, The Pittsburgh Penguins and The Mario Lemieux Foundation, and combine it with the state-of-the-art photo mosaic technology and artistry of Picture Mosaics? One amazing photo mosaic experience. The initial goal was to create a large permanent 20ft x 8ft mural in new Penguins CONSOL arena, however with the addition of touch screen kiosks and an online photo mosaic, it became much more. The Mario Mosaic was a great way to involve the community and help raise funds for cancer and neonatal research; without a doubt it has become a main attraction at the new hockey arena.

Developed for this project were several key components: a donation system, a custom user photo upload flow, and a stunning interactive photo mosaic. After several months of collecting donations and photos, the photo mosaic was designed and executed in three great forms: an amazing 20ft x 8ft mural, two interactive/searchable kiosks, and a online interactive mosaic.

Picture Mosaics designed and developed many of the key solutions for Mario Mosaic, which include the following:
• Custom donation and photo upload flow and microsite.
• Photo moderation and review.
• Full production and installation of 20ft x 8ft mosaic (2800 dpi) with a custom kiosk applications and touch screen terminals so users can easily search and find their photo(s) and interact with mosaic.
• An online interactive mosaic to allow visitors to search, explore, and share the mosaic in a easy and user friendly way. Since the mosaic was ultra wide format, a dynamically resizable mosaic viewer was implemented and deployed for all web browsers

About 10,000 unique photos were submitted for the first round and exist in the current photo mosaic. However there were about 21,000 locations available, and so the Mario Lemieux Foundation has re-opened donations and photo submission until the end of the 2010-2011 hockey season. Submit your photo today and help support a great cause!
