Rooftop Yoga Classes Begin As Part of Montreal Community Initiative

Yoga and urban agriculture combine to create an exciting new relationship between health, sustainability and community in Montreal

After a long winter and chilly start to spring, yoga fans will soon have the ideal way to enhance their yoga practice and enjoy the Montreal sun all summer long: Rooftop yoga classes.

Beginning May 24th, yoga classes will begin on the gorgeous green rooftop of the Santropol Roulant in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal.

This rooftop is no ordinary roof. It's been brought to life and turned green with a unique lush urban garden, the ideal locale for an enriching, outdoor yoga experience. Students can enjoy their weekly practice in this ideal open-air locale while connecting to nature, right in the heart of the city.

The program is being offered by two popular Montreal yoga instructors, Justine Romanoff and Jennifer Kruidbos, as part of a community initiative to promote wellness and initiate the health-conscious into the progressive idea of urban agriculture. They hope to introduce members of the Montreal community to the practice of yoga, as well as the idea of self-sustainability through urban gardens. Jen and Justine believe that these elements, when combined, create healthier communities and happier cities.

"The goal of rooftop yoga is to gather people in a beautiful rooftop space where they can connect with their bodies and learn about the tightly interrelated relationship between nature and society," says Jennifer Kruidbos, former corporate employee turned yoga instructor. Kruidbos says she was inspired by Santropol Roulant's initiatives and felt the rooftop garden was the ideal space for yoga. "Yoga aims to help people experience the bliss of developing a curious and accepting awareness of their body and environment, and what better place than a rooftop garden," says Jennifer.

The program is also linked to Santropol Roulant's community mission. A Montreal non-profit food delivery service, Santropol Roulant has been helping cultivate the local rooftop garden movement and nourish the local community through active youth engagement, urban food systems and community care.
