The top performers at Vanquish Marketing Group just returned from Mexico, where they enjoyed a recognition retreat. The director of operations shared his views on corporate travel, networking, and the firm's hiring initiative.

“I’m not sure if I believe that there are any secret formulas for success, but I do know there are a few key activities that will make succeeding more likely. One of those, without a doubt, is creating an environment that encourages talented people to work together as a team,” explained Chris, Vanquish Marketing Group’s director of operations.

With that in mind, Chris went on to explain some of the approaches he and his colleagues take to cultivate this type of atmosphere. “We get creative with social events, and I think that makes a huge difference in the level of collaboration and camaraderie that our associates feel. By far though, my favorite way to both encourage a collaborative atmosphere and reward our top performers is to go on a trip together.”

Chris and his high achievers just returned from a weekend in Cancun, where he treated a select few members of his team to an all-expenses-paid stay at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. They all enjoyed world-class pampering and luxurious accommodations, as well as a prestigious awards ceremony during which the achievements of those in attendance were celebrated. “The most exciting thing about the weekend for me was the chance to meet industry leaders from across the U.S. and Canada. We shared what does and doesn’t work for us in the various regions in which we operate, and also got to know one another as more than just names on our cell phones. I love networking opportunities like this,” said Chris.

Of course, not everyone shares Chris’ enthusiasm for networking. For those members of his team who find it a little daunting, Chris has developed a few strategies. “First, I tell people to do their homework,” Chris stated. “Know who is going to be at an event and know why you want to meet them. Also think about why they should want to meet you. Networking is about exchanging value, not just business cards.” Also, he counsels his team members to arrive early (but not too early), keep at least two pens on hand, ask open-ended questions, and mingle with people that they don’t already know. “Then there’s the most important tip of all: smile! People rarely die at these things so it’s important not to take yourself too seriously,” Chris remarked.
