There are very few experiences like being on the road – or in the air – to help develop a sense of camaraderie.”

It is because of the high value placed on travel opportunities that Charleen confidently invests in conferences and leadership events like the one she and her top performers just attended. She and her key players recently spent an entire weekend networking with industry leaders from across North America and sharing best practice strategies with other marketers. On top of this, the team enjoyed training sessions and educational seminars designed to both instruct and motivate.

“Traveling to retreats together is quite an investment, but a worthwhile one for a number of reasons,” declared Charleen. “For one thing, it’s a way for me to show that I mean what I say about being personally invested in the success of the people who work here.” 

For her, integrity is one of the differences between someone who is willing to earn the right to be a leader, and someone with a title who throws his or her weight around. “Some people seem to believe that leadership is a function of volume. In other words, the loudest person is the one in charge,” she explained. “That style of leadership may seem to work on the surface, but in truth people only follow someone like that because they have to, and often they are so resentful that they secretly hope that something goes wrong to make that pseudo-leader look bad.”

True leadership in Charleen’s estimation is more about respect than intimidation. It’s about working harder, staying later, and showing others what success looks like. “Most importantly, it’s about action, not just words. When I say that education, networking, and leadership are important to me, I don’t just make noise – we take a trip.”

This approach has obviously paid off with her team, as Superior, Inc. was just named as one of the top five offices in the nation. More importantly, though, is how this emphasis on leadership will impact the new hires that Charleen plans on making in the coming year. “We’ve got big plans for growth, so that means expanding our executive roster. I’m excited to see who will be coming on, but even more excited to know that they will be working in an environment that exemplifies integrity, collaboration, and excellence through our commitment to development through training and travel opportunities.”
