Social Networking Startup Aims to Get Girls to Create Technology, Not Just Consume It

Only days remain in the 1st ever Women Startup Challenge by Women Who Tech, Craig Newmark of craigslist & Fred & Joanne Wilson. ITgirls {pronounced 'it'girls} is a new social networking site geared for tween girls ages 8-12. The site not only offers cool streaming video communication via WebRTC, but it's a site with a purpose: To engage, encourage, & educate Tween girls to code.

ITgirls is a membership driven site that brings all the tools for coding into one place.  Video driven curriculum taught by tween girls, coding challenges & awesome monthly giveaways like a new iPhone, Apple Watch, or laptop keep the members engaged & excited about completing coding courses.

Tweens spend an average of 7.5 hours / day online.  The 20 million or so tween girls that reside in the US are huge consumers of technology. ITgirls aims to flip the dynamic by making them creators of technology as well.

"By engaging, encouraging, & educating young girls, we not only give them the cognitive development, but the confidence in their skills & abilities to go further in their formal education in a STEM field.  If we want more female Computer Science grads in 2022, it starts now & it starts with ITgirls."

Tara Schott, Founder

“By creating a social coding community where girls can code in tandem, they can chat, laugh, and create personal websites with HTML5, CSS, JAVA, Ruby on Rails – developing a portfolio, collaborating in Git & learning skills that will empower them for their entire lives.” – Tara Schott, Founder

ITgirls is currently seed funding via the 2015 Women Startup Challenge on Crowdrise - Challenge ends May 29th -  Get involved and donate to aid the advancement of women in the technology field.
