Social Enterprise Encourages Shoppers to Give Back on Black Friday

On one of the largest shopping days of the year BMe is calling on the community to help create opportunities for success and build growth in communities across America.

On Black Friday, BMe Community, a national network of all races and genders, will be asking shoppers to invest some of their money in building prosperous communities across America. During the organization’s “Give Back to Black” drive, which will run from Friday November 27 thru December 31, 2015, consumers will be asked to donate at www.bmecommunity.org to support initiatives that annually serve over 400,000 people.

Since 2012, BMe has invested nearly $2M in 142 unsung black men who work every day to build their communities. As a thriving social enterprise, BMe has grown to 5 Cities, and built a network of over 35,000 people who care about educating students, protecting our streets, building a stronger economy and healthier environments.

“The Give Back to Black drive is about giving all of our children a better future,” says Trabian Shorters, CEO and Founder of BMe Community. “In today’s distorted dialog about race, we forget that we all value good schools, safe streets, a strong economy and a healthy environment - BMe is the Community that remembers our better nature and builds a better future.”

This year BMe produced the #BlackMenLove op-ed series found online in major media outlets, and released a New York Times Bestseller, “REACH: 40 Black Men Speak on Living, Leading and Succeeding.”

“There is a great need right now for more positive conversations about black men in America,” said Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a South African social rights activist and reviewer of REACH. “The men whose stories are shared in this book make a powerful argument for the value and grace of every human being.”

In 2016, through the #16in16 campaign BMe will be teaching 1,000 students how to access and manage $16 million in college funding, give a half-a-million dollars directly to black men leading service initiatives, and conducting a national college speaking tour.

On one of the largest shopping days of the year BMe is calling on the community to help create opportunities for success and build growth in communities across America.

“At our core, BMe is inspired black men working with others for the benefit of all,” Shorters said.

BMe Community is backed by individual gifts and by leading foundations including The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement and The Heinz Endowments.

About BMe Community: BMe Community is a growing network of all races and genders committed to building better communities across the U.S. BMe is built upon black fathers, coaches, businessmen and students who lead by example to strengthen neighborhoods, mentor young people and create businesses.
