RS Components Continues to Empower Young Engineers at Formula Student Competition

Sponsors products for six participating university teams

RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, revs up its commitment to support engineers of the future through the sponsorship of two new student teams participating in the 2015 Formula Society of Automotive Engineers-Australasia (SAE-A) competition.  The teams from Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Melbourne join four other teams from University of Technology Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Wollongong, and Curtin University to benefit from RS’ sponsorship programmes in support of young engineers.

The competition challenges the student teams to design, build and race a 600cc formula-style race car.  RS will sponsor products giving the students access to thousands of the latest technologies and components.  This will help them find new inspirations to develop new ideas in their race car designs.

“More often than not, students absorb best when learning is taken out of the classroom, and the Formula SAE-A competition presents a key opportunity to simulate the real world for young engineers.  As teams showcase their cost-effective vehicles, their understanding of the vehicle exhibits the abundance of talent in this field, often landing them employment in big names in the automotive industry,” said Guy James Dann, Country Manager of Australia and New Zealand, RS Components. “RS will continue to roll out programmes to champion and support young engineers globally.

The team at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Redback Racing was awarded 2nd place in the Cost and Manufacturing Event of Formula SAE-A 2014.  “2014 was the first year of our new design cycle and we gained valuable engineering and business skills despite experiencing many challenges along the way.  Teamwork and dedication were key ingredients for our achievements.  We also overcame new design and manufacturing issues with resource support from RS Components. The team looks forward to continued support from RS in the 2015 race,” said Lisa Tu, Business Team Leader, UNSW Redback Racing.

After the recently-concluded race in December 2014 in Melbourne, the next Formula SAE-A main event in Australia is scheduled for December 2015.

RS also has similar sponsorship programmes with universities in Europe and Japan.
