RED Marketing Solutions Uses March Madness for Team Building

The leaders at RED Marketing Solutions are committed to finding new team-building opportunities on a regular basis. The firm's director offered her thoughts on using March Madness to a company's advantage.

Many companies view the NCAA basketball tournament as nothing more than a distraction, but the leaders at RED Marketing Solutions believe that there is team-strengthening potential offered by March Madness. As Renee, the firm’s director of operations, explained, “Instead of worrying about how the tournament might diminish productivity, we look for ways to embrace its popularity and let it inform an atmosphere of fun and healthy competition.”

Several sources have estimated productivity losses of around $200 million in the U.S. during the tournament, with much of that due to the distraction of filling out and obsessing over brackets. As the director said, “Something like half of all the workers in the U.S. have participated in office pools or bracket challenges, so I think companies should look at this as an opportunity to bring their team members together in fun and unique ways. We’ve even had office pools of our own. There’s no money on the line, but bragging rights seem more than enough incentive to get our associates excited.”

"If we tried to discourage our associates from participating in things like bracket challenges, we would miss out on great chances to boost engagement and morale throughout the office."

Renee, Director of Operations

The fact that the tournament gets underway with games starting at noon on the east coast makes it an ideal workplace distraction. Renee and the rest of the firm’s leadership team use this fact to their advantage by setting up viewing parties. As the director stated, “Along with watching the games, we also plan potluck lunches to liven things up. We have a lot of basketball fans on our team, but even those members that couldn’t tell a Tar Heel from a Longhorn have a great time when March Madness comes around.”

Renee understands that productivity cannot always be measured strictly by numbers. As she put it, “I know that, in the long run, the team-building effects of our March Madness activities will benefit our organization in significant ways. If we tried to discourage our associates from participating in things like bracket challenges, we would miss out on great chances to boost engagement and morale throughout the office.”

RED Marketing Solutions’ Director Discusses Team-Building Philosophy

Whether it’s March Madness, holiday season get-togethers, or travel opportunities throughout the year, the leaders at RED Marketing Solutions always maintain a strong focus on enhancing the bonds between their team members. As Renee commented, “Our people can only produce stellar results when they’re able to apply their talents in a supportive environment. We use team-building events of all types to help them appreciate each other’s unique skills and personalities. This enables streamlined collaborations in the office and amazing successes for the brands we represent.”
