The panel discussed PSE&G’s Hospital Efficiency Program, which provides first dollar funding for the installation of energy conservation measures and technologies including HVAC, humidification, building envelope, motors, steam systems, refrigeration, lighting and other energy consuming measures.  To date, the program has completed efficiency work at 33 hospitals and together they are saving about $10 million per year in energy costs.

The beauty of the Hospital Efficiency Program is that it removes the cost barrier for energy efficiency projects by providing upfront funding to hospitals and allowing them to repay a small portion of the cost over time without an interest charge.

PSE&G has identified hospitals and the healthcare industry as a known high-energy use sector that focused its limited capital dollars on its core mission of patient care and was often hard-pressed to finance energy efficiency upgrades.

It also recognized that by making an investment in these facilities and their physical plants, hospitals can reduce their overall electric and natural gas energy usage annually, save hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs each year, and significantly reduce their overall carbon footprint.

The attendees heard from the expert panel about the program and how it works, about specific project experiences, and also received insight into the types of projects that are being funded by PSE&G.  As important, attendees learned that PSE&G has been approved by the NJ Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) to spend an additional $45 million over the next two (2) years and $10M of those dollars will be spent on combined heat and power or distributed generation projects.
