New School Aims to Reform Islam

MECCA Institute, a new progressive and inclusive Islamic theological school based in the United States, hosts Islamic scholars, religious leaders and social justice activists from across the globe.

MECCA, an acronym that stands for Muslim Educational Center for Creative Academics, Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded last year that will house an online school and a think tank that will serve as a center of Islamic learning.

The organization’s vision is to provide, globally, through its think tank and online school, modern academic research and courses that are devoid of political interpretations, providing men, women and sexual minorities an inclusive Islamic theological training.

To revise and reform Qur'anic interpretation for today's conditions and circumstances.

Daayiee Abdullah, Executive Director

“It means having the opportunity to revise and reform Qur’anic interpretation for today’s conditions and circumstances,” said Daayiee Abdullah, the Executive Director of MECCA Institute. “Working with a worldwide group of Islamic scholars, religious leaders, and social justice activists, means Mecca Institute will equip its learners with historical and modern background knowledge and tools for researching the Quran and secondary resources.”

Two weeks ago, the organization did its first effort of publically raising funds. Through the crowd-funding platform Indiegogo the organization put up a request for $100,000 to make its September start of operations smoother.
