New Documentary, Rimshots is like Whiplash in Atlanta
Atlanta-based filmmaker, Jon Graham, is producing a documentary about Jack Bell, percussion professor at Georgia State University and principle percussionist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for 30+ years (retired). Over his career he taught over 150 percussion students. One of his students is now the touring drummer with Earth, Wind and Fire.
Atlanta, GA, March 2, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Filmmaker, Jon Graham, is producing a documentary about Jack Bell, percussion professor at Georgia State University and principle percussionist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for 30+ years (retired). The film will trace Bell’s roots in Elkhart, Indiana where at age 15 he found his drum teacher, Harold Firestone, dead. This traumatic event propelled Jack to become what many consider a legend in the Atlanta percussion scene. Over his career he taught over 150 percussion students. One of his students is now the touring drummer with Earth, Wind and Fire.
Jack is similar in some ways to J.K. Simmons’ Oscar winning portrayal of “Fletcher”. Though not as nasty, Jack’s perfectionist nature infected most of his students. However, his overwhelming love for his students is what has become his hallmark. The film is a celebration of the relationship between teacher and student. Emrah Kotan, former Bell student and touring drummer for Grammy award winner, India Arie says, “Jack was like my Father in the United States. I’m so thrilled to participate in this project to honor him.”
