But life hasn’t been a steady stream of escrows and roses for Benson. When the recession hit in 2007, it proved a devastating blow, as it was for so many when the bubble burst on the inflated housing industry.
Benson found himself deeply in debt by 2009. Financial pressure was taking a toll on his marriage. He was, in a word, flailing, struggling to catch a life preserver in a suddenly stormy sea. “I wasn’t the best person that I could possibly be,” he admits.
That’s when a friend introduced Benson to Scientology.
“I was very intrigued,” he says. “I decided to open the door and take a look.”
What he found changed the course of his life. Scientology training helped him with “the everyday lifestyle of coping with family and coping with the stress at work and coping with finance and the problems in the world… I now have the tools to communicate better, to stay better organized, most importantly to not be reactive to the everyday challenges of life.”
Scientology spiritual counseling (auditing) helped Benson “learn how to focus better, how to see more, how to feel more, how to be more aware,” he says. “This immediately helped me focus on my job, my tasks, with less distraction. And right then I knew that Scientology had something that would change my life forever.”
Scientology also made a marked difference in how he dealt with people. “When I took that to work, I was able to accomplish more, faster, to communicate better with my employees, to be more aware, to communicate better with my clients, to be more effective,” Benson says. And the changes at home were no less dramatic as he greatly improved his skills as a husband and father.
“My wife immediately wanted to become involved in Scientology,” says Benson. She joined staff at the Church of Scientology of Salt Lake City to help people by training as an auditor (Scientology spiritual counselor).
“I grew up not really knowing which direction I wanted to go in life, and I think that's true for many of us,” Benson says. He finds he is “very comfortable with who I am, which direction I want to go.”
The Scientology religion was founded by author and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. The first Church of Scientology was formed in Los Angeles in 1954 and the religion has expanded to more than 11,000 Churches, Missions and affiliated groups, with millions of members in 167 countries.
