Leonardo Group and Toyota Material Handling Partner in Lean Process Design Workshop

Leonardo Group Americas and Toyota Material Handling are partnering on a 3-day Mixed Model Line Design Workshop, hosted by Toyota at their award-winning Columbus, Indiana plant. Learn about Lean Design, see it in action at a Plant of the Year, and apply it using the latest methods and software tools.

A study conducted by Professor Koichi Shimizu in 2004 concluded that up to 90% of the realized benefits of Lean come from designing and managing Lean processes, but over a decade later few companies and Lean practitioners understand the step-by-step method fully. Although today most companies acknowledge and embrace the need to be “Lean”, many Lean improvement efforts don’t have a significant impact on the bottom line, and company leaders have a hard time seeing the hard dollar benefits. Part of the reason for this is a lack of knowledge regarding Lean Process Design. This workshop is for participants to learn these essential skills, practice them in a classroom simulation environment, and then apply them immediately in their home factory. This workshop is led by experts in Mixed Model Line Design from Leonardo Group Americas, with participation from industry experts from Toyota.

Students learn best by doing, and this workshop will include the actual implementation of the line design tools and methods in a classroom environment. Timer Pro, a Software tools in use at Toyota will be used to define Standard Work and perform line balancing, and participants will design an actual production line. Designs will then be tested using dynamic simulation modeling tools.

A learning opportunity like this happens rarely: the chance to learn about Mixed Model Line Design, and then see it in action in one of the best plants in North America.

Participants will have a chance to compare what was learned in the classroom, and applied in a simulation environment, to what is actually done at a factory that was awarded "US Plant of the Year" in 2010 by Plant Engineering Magazine. The plant tours will be led by seasoned Toyota experts, with a focus on the line design tools applied in the classroom. These experts will also join participants during lunch breaks, for a Q&A session to answer specific questions.
