First Polish University to Use Beacons - University of Lodz Has Just Launched the SmartUni Project

The University of Lodz has just presented SmartUni - an innovative project using microlocalisation in the beacons technology. The mobile application is designed for applicants and students. It presents the University's offer of studies, promotes extracurricular activities, and simplifies movement around the University's facilities.

The heart of the SmartUni project is a mobile application which serves as a modern, interactive guide for all current and future students of the University of Lodz. It was mostly designed with foreign students in mind, whom it should help to move around the University and to discover the city of Lodz.

Main features of the app can be divided into 4 groups:

SmartUni - Shape your future with every action!

Lukasz Felsztukier, CEO, Linteri

·       Admissions – Students can learn about the offer of studies, about the application procedure and about the student exchange programme.

·       News and calendar – events worth attending, news from the University of Lodz, as well as dates of the end-of-term examinations, first and last day of semester and days off.

·       Student Zone - contains information about the work of the Deans' Offices, Libraries, Dormitories, Visas and Insurance. The microlocalisation system (beacons) helps to reach your destination on campus.

·       Life in Lodz - section about living in the city (shopping, health, sports, entertainment), using public transportation and visiting local attractions.

The mobile application uses the microlocalisation running under beacons technology. The technology allows its users to check their localisation by using a low-energy Bluetooth signal instead of the traditional GPS longitude and latitude. Probably, it is the first use of such technology in Poland to support education.

Due to the originality of the idea, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education has acknowledged the project as one of the most interesting – the University of Łódź won the 3rd place in the competition for funding under the European Social Fund. The project is available in 4 languages: Polish, English, Russian and Chinese. The project was delivered by Linteri – polish startup specializing in proximity and ibeacon solutions. You can find more about the app at smart.uni.lodz.pl

The project is co-financed by the European Union under the European Social Fund.
