Jonathan Young - Bio

Jonathan has almost 25 years’ experience in IT, initially in Manufacturing and in Pharmaceuticals and then the majority in Investment Banking and Markets IT, working for major financial services organisations.

A graduate of the Victoria University of Manchester (B.Eng. Mechanical Engineering) as well as the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (M.Sc. Control Systems and Information Technology), Jonathan started his career as a developer for Optical Fibres, a subsidiary of BICC based in North Wales. Over two years there, he wrote process control software in PDP-11 Fortran and manufacturing workflow software in VMS Fortran, RMS and RDB.

Following a brief spell as a contract programmer, Jonathan spent two years writing manufacturing process development software as a Development Scientist for SmithKline Beecham based in Worthing.

Moving to Barclays de Zoete Wedd in the mid-nineties, Jonathan worked as a team leader in Fixed Income Post Trade IT on the implementation of the RIMS product before moving to ABN AMRO in 1997. During three fruitful years at ABN AMRO, Jonathan worked in London and Amsterdam on the bank-wide BASEL I Market Risk platform, leading development in UI and database and ultimately managing all development on that platform – from UI development, through database management and all risk calculations.

m.a.partners was a niche Financial Markets consulting firm for which Jonathan was an Associate Partner from 2000 to 2003. It was during this part of his career that he first worked with FDM, when he was managing the Test Centre in Fixed Income IT at J.P. Morgan and also during an assignment in Equities IT for Deutsche Bank, when he was instrumental in introducing FDM to the bank. He also worked for the CIO at ABN AMRO during their EDS outsourcing deal and worked to set up a joint venture with Indian IT Services Company, HCL Technology.

In 2003, Jonathan joined Royal Bank of Scotland as Head of Credit Trading technology and led the implementation of the first Credit Default Swap trading and risk management applications for the bank;  – again engaging FDM to supply resources into that department, before moving to HSBC in July 2004 as Head of FX Options trading systems.

During an eleven year career at HSBC, at various times Jonathan ran many of the front office (trading and risk) IT teams including FX Options, Equity Derivatives, Structured Funds, Convertible Bonds, Metals and Commodities and Energy Derivatives. He was also Head of Research and Sales IT, Head of Finance and Product Control IT, held regionals roles as well as serving on the board of the captive offshore resourcing entity and leading GLT’s transformation for Global Banking and Markets (GBM).

Jonathan has experience in the management of risk, having led the IT Risk function for HSBC GBM globally from early 2014. Plus, in his last five years in HSBC, Jonathan was Managing Director running the IT for the two largest businesses in HSBC GBM (Foreign Exchange IT and Balance Sheet Management). He then ran the Production Services for Global Banking and Markets, managing around 1,000 staff and supporting all of the live systems of the GBM business.
