Doctor Opportunities for Consultants & Registrars in Ireland

In recent years many Doctors have had to emigrate in order to find suitable employment, due in large part to the financial restrictions placed on healthcare spending. This trend is beginning to change as the Irish Medical Sector looks set for a period of growth in the coming years.

From newly qualified Doctors to seasoned Consultants, there are many who have emigrated and few who have not seriously considered taking the plunge. While it is widely regarded as a source of regret that the country is losing such highly trained professionals, it is generally accepted that they had little option but to look overseas for a real chance of career progression. The cutbacks brought in during the economic downturn meant that training, promotional and other career progression opportunities were simply no longer available. Could a hardworking and ambitious young Doctor really be blamed for having made such a such a move?

Fortunately, it appears that things are changing, with all the economic indicators pointing to an increasingly strong recovery.  It now seems very likely that after years of cuts, the public health sector will once again receive an increased allocation of financial resources that should allow for some much needed recruitment. After years of staffing cutbacks, recruitment embargoes and demands to ‘do more with less’ it seems that once again the Irish Medical Sector looks set for a period of growth, and there has already been a strong resurgence in demand for Consultants and Registrars in top positions.

This demand for Consultants and Registrars looks set to continue, as Health Chiefs have to increasingly rely on temporary locum and agency staff to cope with the workload.  Take for example the current shortage of  Obstetricians – Ireland has the third lowest number of Consultant Obstetricians among leading Western countries, yet at the same time has consistently recorded the highest per capita birth-rate in western Europe.

The simple fact is that Ireland needs Doctors. Urgently. While this may be true of many countries, few can offer the same benefits as Ireland, where exceptionally high salaries, attractive benefits and superb accommodation are very much the norm. So if you are a Consultant of even a well experienced Non Consultant Hospital Doctor who has a desire to get the maximum possible benefit from your experience and training then a Role in Ireland could prove to be a very attractive option for you.
