Do Indie Filmmakers Have Hope In A Blockbuster "World"

With blockbuster films like Jurassic World and Age of Ultron breaking records in the box office, are independent filmmakers getting left behind?

As the summer of blockbuster films destroys previous records, independent filmmakers have a new chance to break through the crowded marketplace. According to the new book SUCCESS IN FILM by veteran producers Julia Verdin (Merchant of Venice, Stander, Riding the Bullet, Two Jacks) and Matt Dean (The Devil Within, Two Jacks, Lost Soul), the digital marketplace has given filmmakers a brand-new way to find success.

·      “The good news is with the digital revolution, anything is possible,” says Verdin. “The sad thing is that I have so many filmmakers who come to me for advice and help once they have actually made their film and they’re stuck and can’t sell it. So many of the problems they are dealing with could have been avoided if they had sat down with someone experienced before they started.”

"Thank you Julia and Matt for your insights and roadmap to accomplishing success in the very unpredictable world of independent film making!"

A concern for many filmmakers is how to find distribution, but the old methods of distributing films are changing rapidly as filmmakers find new ways to reach their audience.

·      “We are in the midst of a renaissance for filmmakers,” says Dean. “With the right amount of effort in the right places your film can be seen by a large audience. You don’t have to go through a distribution company to make your film available. The question a filmmaker has to answer is, will that film be worth watching?”

Quantity rather than quality has often been a complaint by moviegoers who are demanding more of  films today. Some suggest that the call for better films is more easily answered by independent filmmakers who are willing to take risks. But that risk comes at a cost.

·      “It’s more about identifying what your real goal is with making your film,” says Verdin. “What you hope to see happen as a result of making that film and then backtracking into a plan that works.”

Some guardians of the marketplace still exist, however independent filmmakers can now reach an audience through YouTube, Vimeo, iTunes, and Amazon’s digital service. Though this strategy may not work for a film with a multimillion-dollar budget, it can be a great option for micro-budget or low-budget films.

·      “Start marketing before you start shooting,” recommends Dean. “Use social media, blog sites, anything you can do to grow your audience long before the film comes out and you’ll have a much better chance of finding success.”

Success in Film is available now in print through Amazon and digitally for Kindle, Nook, and iBooks.
