China Maleic Anhydride Market Appears Depressed as Dragged by Weak Economy And Low Oil Price

The import volume of MAH in China was relatively small in 2014, which was only 402 tonnes, while the import price maintained an uptrend since April 2014.

The industrial production of maleic anhydride (MAH) in China dates back to the 1950s. However, it was not until the 1980s the production of MAH in China had stepped into a phase of development when China initially put forward the idea of learning from the western countries and focusing on economy development as well as introducing several sets of MAH production equipment with capacity over 10,000 t/a.

According to CCM’s survey, in 2014, the production capacity of MAH in China has exceeded 2.2 million t/a. But the MAH output in 2014 was only 743,000 tonnes, among which a proportion of 3.86% (28,686 tonnes) was exported. With the international crude oil prices fell sharply in H2 2014 (a fall of 46%-48% in 2014 whole year), the export price of MAH in China witnessed a decline since Nov. 2014, reaching USD1.03/Kg in March 2015, decreasing by 39.06% compared with that in Jan. 2014.

The import volume of MAH in China was relatively small in 2014, which was only 402 tonnes, while the import price maintained an uptrend since April 2014.

The above findings are from CCM’s recent report 2014 China Maleic Anhydride (MAH) Industry Report, this report describes the development of MAH in China, especially the development in 2014. In China, the MAH industry is upgrading its production technologies and enterprises are restructuring. At the end of the report, the future development dynamics of MAH in China has been analyzed through the Michael Porter’s Five Factors Model.
