Austin Artist, with a Royal Connection, Creates a Critter Crown for Princess Charlotte

"A crown doesn't just come in any old thing, it has to be part of the keepsake. I loved the nod to nature with the butterflies plus how I mixed and matched the patterns to represent the Kate's fashion style - young and fresh. Then, I added a touch of glitter to make sure that it makes an entrance." states Isber

A new crown for Princess Charlotte has been created by Austin jeweler and artist, “Sugar” Gay Isber, who has a royal connection – she has already made a crown for Prince George and his mum, the Duchess of Cambridge. Isber also has designed jewelry for the royal great grandmother, HRM Queen Elizabeth, plus Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla.

Just in time for the Princess’s christening, Gay also created a children’s style story book to accompany her creation - The Very Fun Story of How Princess Charlotte’s Giggles Created the Critter Crown with the final pages of the book documenting the gifts that she already has presented to the Windsor family.  A presentation box, with flying butterflies and a touch of glitter will accompany this special gift.

Instead of a pink sparkly typical crown, Isber was inspired by the tomboy side of Kate Middleton.  “I fell for a colorful collection of hand crafted, lamp worked critters that are so whimsical – the beads really inspired me. Along with a sprinkling of Swarovski crystals and chartreuse pearls there are: butterflies, birds, frogs, cats, dogs, farm animals and sea creatures. It would have been easy to whip up a Swarovski crystal pink princess crown but there is no challenge in that.  I love the Critter Crown, as it is a work of art, a conversation starter and along with the book that I wrote that tells the story of how a frog wanted to see the world from the Princess’ head and then others joined them, will be a great bedtime story for the Princess and Prince George.  I also hope that someday she will play dress up using it.”  Gay states.

Isber is a seventh generation Houstonian and a Canadian citizen. When Gay lived in Canada, she created jewelry for the Royal Museums and Parliament of Ontario (Ontario Legislative Building) gift stores.  That is where she meet HRM Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles on their visits.  “When I meet Queen Elizabeth, I told her that when I gave Prince Charles and Camila their gifts that I also included a gift to her, too but I thought that she might not ever have gotten it, so I was giving her a replacement bracelet.  She actually laughed out loud. It was a touch of royalty that I will never forget. I was the last person that she talked to before she got in her limousine and the crowd around me was still laughing. ” said Isber.

When she met Prince William, in Ottawa with his new bride on their first trip to Canada, he also had a great laugh.  “I told him that is was “Kate’s Vacuuming Tiara”. Although, it was 100% museum quality and made of the finest ingredients, giving it a fun name really made him laugh, just thinking of her actually cleaning, I guess. He stopped himself about a second before he was going to put the crown on his head.  Now, that would have been a picture worth keeping – him wearing her crown.” Gay adds.

The presentation box is hand made by Gay, too. “A crown doesn’t just come in any old thing, it has to be part of the keepsake.  I loved the nod to nature with the butterflies plus how I mixed and matched the patterns to represent the Kate’s fashion style – young and fresh.  Then, I added a touch of glitter to make sure that it makes an entrance.”
