Newark, NJ - Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Patrick Council, Jr., along with WBNA Liberty legend and Hall of Fame Inductee Sue Wicks announced a partnership with the City of Newark to launch a new four-week health and wellness competition called "FIGHT2BFIT" that was held on October 6, at 4:30 p.m.  The purpose of the program was to connect children aged 8 through 11 with athlete mentors to place a holistic approach to mental health, anti-bullying actions character development, and physical fitness.

Mayor Baraka stated, "We are privileged to have a role model athlete like Sue Wicks partner with us to provide Newark's youth with a program that will build their physical and mental strength, help them develop their character, and teach them life lessons.  This program will enable many of our youth to transform themselves - and our City - into lives they can all believe in."

During the competition, willing participants will call daily exercises to action by uplifting strength and mental confidence using quizzes to challenge physical and mental health topics.  The design of the Fight 2B Fit is to build upon school spirit in an incentive-based environment using health and fitness that is fun for children and easy for teachers/parents.  The idea of this design is to track individual progress and the progress of competing schools.

According to Mayor Baraka's report, WNBA legend Sue Wicks and Harvard Business School graduate and Division I athlete Corinne Nevinny, launched Fight2BFit in 2011 to build athletes who found the tenets of sportsmanship, teamwork, and persistence vital to lifetime success.  The program has now completed its 10th nationwide program with more than 5,000 children aged 8 to 11 having participated.  The organization has now expanded its program into Florida, while growing in California, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Massachusetts.
