Eleven year old Erin has Down syndrome, vision problems, and a determined mother with over 25 years of experience as an optician. Single mother, Maria Dellapina, has created an eyeglass frame specifically designed to address the issue of ill-fitting eyeglasses that children with special needs often encounter. About Erin's original eyeglasses, Maria said "She hated them. They would constantly slip down her face and she would even hide them from me.".

Children with special needs often have unique facial features that make it difficult to properly fit them with eyeglasses. Their ears are often smaller and lower-set and the bridge of the nose is less pronounced. Currently, there over 400,000 persons with Down Syndrome in the United States alone. A vast majority of those with DS have vision problems requiring corrective lenses before preschool age.

After years of attempting to properly fit her daughter with eyeglasses, Maria decided she was fighting a losing battle and launched her campaign to design an eyeglass frame. What began as a personal battle resulted in a triumph for many special needs kids and their parents. Over 3,000 pair of the special frames sold in the first 6 months of opening the business in June 2008. Since then, Specs4Us has expanded the selection to include many adult sizes, several colors and even a clip-on for sunglasses. Erin's World frames have crossed borders into Canada, Germany, Europe and Australia.

"She's walked into a whole new world." says L. O'Neil of her 6 year old daughter, Ezrie. "Books are more interesting now and she has advanced (according to her therapists) suddenly, as if overnight. I watched her flip completely upside down and then back up and her glasses didn't budge on her face. Transitioning her into wearing these glasses was easy."
