Melanoma Rates Rising in Those 18 to 39, Mayo Clinic Reports

Melanoma, like many other modern diseases, had previously been considered an age related condition.

A recent Mayo Clinic study reported the incidence of melanoma is rising in people between the ages of 18 to 39 and among women in particular. Severe sunburn as children or the use of tanning beds have been cited as possible reasons. However, there is no agreement among researchers on any relationship between melanoma and UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds. Melanoma, like many other modern diseases, had previously been considered an age related condition.

Why is it that young adults are now affected more than Baby Boomers who didn't have access to the higher SPF lotions so commonly used today?

"The fact is that low levels of vitamin D are now common and have been linked to a greater risk for all types of cancer and other diseases," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "The original way our bodies got vitamin D was through diet and exposure to the sun. These two sources were available to the human race well before the creation of sunscreens and vitamin supplements and allowed the human race to thrive."

"Current instructions to stay out of the sun, cover-up and use the highest SPF lotion available may turn out to be bad advice," note the Griesels. "Regular exposure to sunshine directly on our skin, without allowing a burn to occur, serves a critical function for Vitamin D metabolism and other functions. Diet and lifestyle choices, good or bad, determine your potential risk of all disease."
